Below is a list of initiatives and opportunities for action and deep engagement inside and out of University Church:

Illinois Youth Center-Chicago

We have formed a partnership with the Illinois Youth Center that includes a Zoom book discussion and visits (as acceptable during Covid) to play games, talk, and participate in holiday activities. If you would like to get involved, please contact Martha from Black Lives Matter-UChurch.

 

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • Midwest Workers Association, 5152 S. Halsted, Chicago, IL, 60609, (773) 285-0485. MWA is an advocacy organization, mostly focusing on the needs of South Side residents. They are leading a campaign against a gas rate hike, package and deliver food during major holidays (most famous for their Super Bowl tamale program), and offer regular canvassing opportunities. Contact them directly by phone or through their website.
  • The Nature Conservancy (Environmental Justice)
    • UChurch can organize a small group of volunteers to help with environmental stewardship of the area. Visit Nature Conservancy’s site HERE.
    • Areas include: Jackson Park, Bobolink Meadow, Wooded Island, 63rd st Beach
    • email through HERE if you are interested. Most opportunities fall on Saturdays.
  • Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. UChurch has an open invitation to take a group to visit young folks in the center, break bread and fellowship. Contact Pastor Julian if interested.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Social Justice Committee meets 1st Sundays after service. Black Lives Matter-UChurch, a group within the Social Justice Committee, meets the 4th Sunday of every month after the worship service.

HOSPITALITY

WORSHIP

We are a congregation that loves music: classical, traditional spirituals, gospel, rap, hip hop. If you are interested in getting involved in our music ministry, contact Music Director Charles T. Hayes. He welcomes new voices in the choir and any instruments you might play. Share your talents with us!
